Why I’m Running 20km for Men’s Mental Health For My Dad
This year, I’m running 20 kilometres to raise awareness and funds for men’s mental health. I’m doing it in memory of my dad a man I loved deeply, who lost his battle with mental illness by taking his own life.
Losing him broke something in me that will never fully heal. I miss him every single day his voice, his laugh, his presence. But the hardest part is knowing that he suffered in silence, like so many men do.
Globally, suicide is a devastating crisis
- Over 700,000 people die by suicide every year.
- Around 1 person dies every 40 seconds.
- Men account for about 75% of all suicides worldwide.
- That means roughly 525,000 men take their own lives each year —
that’s around 43,750 a month, 10,100 a week, 1,440 a day, and 1 man every minute.
These are not just statistics — they are real people. Fathers, sons, brothers, friends. Like my dad.
Too often, men are told to “man up,” to hide their emotions, to carry the weight of the world on their own. But no one should ever feel like they have to suffer in silence.
That’s why I’m running.
To honour my dad.
To speak out against the stigma.
To help change the story for the next man who feels like giving up.
If my 20km run can start even one conversation, or save even one life, then every step will be worth it.
That’s why I’m fundraising — so that more men can get the life-saving support they need, when they need it most.
MensLine Australia offers free, confidential counselling for men facing mental health challenges, relationship issues, anger, addiction, suicidal thoughts, and emotional pain. They’re there — 24/7 — when someone feels like there’s nowhere else to turn.
Every single donation, no matter the size, truly matters. Your support helps keep these vital services running, reaching more men and saving more lives.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you. You’re helping make sure no man has to face his darkest
